The Features and benefits of the CLP-685

Real Grand Expression

Real Grand Expression. This phrase defines the expressive capability of Clavinova. It is not only the full realization of the sound, the touch and the pedals, but the application of technologies nurtured by crafting acoustic pianos to perfectly integrate these three elements into a single piano. This piano produces that exact sound you want through the touch of the keys and the feel of the pedals. As you play, you will truly feel as though you are playing a grand piano.

The CLP Piano Sound

Two World Class Concert Pianos

The CLP offers two of the world’s finest 9 foot grand pianos to choose from. The CFX, Yamaha’s premier piano is a 9 foot concert grand made by the finest Japanese artisans and technicians Yamaha has to offer. The Bösendorfer Imperial is a hand made piano crafted in the Viennese tradition of fine piano making to encompass a sound with warm bass resonance, singing treble and rich tonal colors. Bösendorfer has a rich history of being the piano of choice of Franz List, Brahms and Johann Strauss.

Both of these superb pianos’ Voices are featured in the Clavinova. Tuned to perfection by a highly-experienced piano technician with the sound from each key sampled individually, Clavinova truly captures the unique tonal character of each of these outstanding instruments.

An Additional 47 instrument voices are present on the CLP to stimulate your musical expression.

Virtual Reality CFX Head Phone Sound

When choosing the CFX Grand setting while wearing headphones the musician will be immersed in the sound of CFX as if they are sitting at the real acoustic piano. Binaural sampling uses special microphones that capture not only the sound but the location the sound is coming from to give the human ear a 3d effect.

480 XG Midid instruments

The CLP-585 is the only CLP to feature an additional 480 voices, 14 drum sets and you can even use a volume pedal.

The sound is heard just as it was played.

The grand piano voices of the Clavinova CLP series were obtained by recording the sounds of a Yamaha CFX concert grand piano. A single piano best suited for recording was selected and then tuned to the finest possible condition by a veteran piano tuner. All the sounds were recorded with meticulous detail resulting a beautiful, harmonious piano Voice.

Smooth tonal transformations perfectly matched to key pressure

Pianists can change the volume of the sound – as well as its dynamics – to achieve both mellow and bright tones by simply changing the pressure they apply to the keys.

The Clavinova features long, carefully-sampled recordings of notes on a piano, reproduces them in rich detail and utilizes unique Yamaha technologies to achieve smooth tonal transitions in response to the touch of the player.

From staccato to legato – superbly expressive sound that responds to the player’s touch

Featuring Yamaha Smooth Release technology, Clavinova offers the crisp tone heard when playing staccato as well as the lingering sound produced by releasing the keys more. This provides finely-nuanced response to the pianist’s playing.

Key-off Samples

The moment your fingers are lifted from the keys of a grand piano, subtle changes occur in the instrument’s tone as the damper is lowered onto the strings to mute the sound. Key-off samples feature actual recordings of these changes, offering a faithful reproduction of the most subtle nuances in the piano’s tone, creating a more realistic overall sound.

The Grand Touch Piano Action

The touch of an acoustic grand

The GrandTouch Keyboard was developed with a clear awareness of the need to recreate the responsive feel of a grand piano. For instance, one of the major characteristics of a grand piano is the wide change in key touch, from playing softly to striking the keys hard. Grand pianos respond to different ways of playing with different key touches—the keys move lightly when played softly, and the keys respond firmly when played strongly. With the GrandTouch Keyboard, Yamaha has considered the key mechanism and weight, as well as the key shape and friction that occurs during key travel. In doing so, we have widened the range of differences in key touch between lighter and harder playing. This lets you naturally sense the difference between louder and quieter sounds. Furthermore, we have designed the GrandTouch keyboard to allow you to play with an expressiveness that rivals that of a grand piano, as the GrandTouch Keyboard gives you tactile feedback from the time you touch the keys until they reach the keybed. What’s more, we have included a mechanism that simulates the lifting of hammers on a grand piano, recreating the feeling of escapement at the end of the key stroke. With this, the GrandTouch Keyboard emulates both the release feeling that is unique to an actual escapement mechanism, and the feeling of stopping that comes afterwards.

Key Counterweights

yamaha key counter weights
Counterweights are embedded in the keys of a grand piano to balance the weight of the hammers and offer more precise control when playing delicately at low volumes. The Clavinova features carefully adjusted counterweights for improved play ability when playing pianissimo with a light touch, and better key return in rapid passages. The keyboard has been fine-tuned to offer optimal balance, emphasizing its superb play ability and grand piano response.

Synthetic ivory key tops – a pleasure to play even after hours of performance

Reproduces the gentle, tactile surface of the ivory keyboards once used in only the finest pianos. It features highly-absorbent material that prevents fingers from slipping even after hours of performing, while retaining the ideal texture and feel.

88 note Linear Graded Hammers

Every single key on a grand piano keyboard is weighted differently. This is because the strings for each note are slightly thinner and shorter in the treble register, becoming thicker and longer towards the bass register. The 88-key Linear Graded Hammer keyboard is the first of its kind to faithfully duplicate this graded touch with differing weights and key return on each one of its keys. This results in a feel and response that is astonishingly like that of a grand piano, and allows players to gain an appreciation for a more authentic touch.

Keyboard Stabilizers – Yamaha-unique mechanisms for improved keyboard stability and durability

Keyboards fulfill the vital role of transforming emotion from your fingertips into sound and therefore, must be smooth to play in order to maintain superb touch for prolonged performances. That is why Yamaha has fitted Keyboard Stabilizers to all 88 keys, offering players a natural touch and improving the stability and durability of the keyboard.

Natural feel, even on the back-end of the keys

Clavinova key tips are far from the fulcrum, so the keys sink smoothly when played near the base
The keys on the Clavinova are constructed so that the support point hidden inside the instrument body is as far from the key tip as possible, improving playability and comfort, even deep on the back of the key.

This construction provides good key travel, even when performing pieces played mainly on the black keys and the backs of the white keys, allowing nuanced variations in touch and broadening your expressive range.

Grand Piano Damper Pedal

Using the damper pedal subtly alters the nature of a piano’s sound and is essential to providing the pianist with all the necessary expressive tools to convey their musical vision. Clavinova digital pianos feature a damper pedal that continually detects depression depth and allows half-pedaling, which lets players make minute adjustments to pedal depression and return, changing the depth and character of their piano sound.

The GP Response Damper Pedal offers a grand piano-style resistance curve, starting out light to the touch and growing heavier as the pedal is depressed further. This allows players to become accustomed to the nuances of delicate pedaling.

CLP Digital Piano Technology

Full-body resonance, just like an acoustic piano

Similar to an acoustic piano, the Clavinova is calibrated carefully, with speaker positioning and body materials checked to ensure that the entire instrument resonates optimally. For a sound image that is very close to the grand piano, these instruments feature Tone Escapement in several locations throughout the body that allow the sound from the speakers to be projected to the listener’s ears without being trapped inside the instrument.

Acoustic Optimizer – Regulation to ensure a balanced tone

The body of the Clavinova contains Acoustic Optimizer that regulate the flow of sound and control tone. A new technology springing from Yamaha’s intimate knowledge of the acoustic properties of the interiors of musical instruments, Acoustic Optimizer deliver natural, smooth feel and tone across the entire keyboard.

Spruce Cone Speakers

As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, the speaker cones on Yamaha CVP-709 digital pianos are made from the leftover spruce wood that is used to build acoustic piano sound boards. This helps to reduce wood waste, and also results in a more natural, piano-like sound. Learn more about our corporate social responsibility initiatives by visiting
