The modern acoustic upright piano has an interesting history. In early quests to save space, some 19th century piano designers simply turned the grand piano on end and made the necessary design adjustments to the action, resulting in the vertically strung “bookcase” piano. Ungainly as that was, there were the even more oddly shaped giraffe, pyramid, and lyre pianos. As these fanciful designs fell by the wayside, the industry settled on fairly standardized dimensions for (in descending order of height) upright, studio, console, and spinet piano cabinets.
Yamaha M560h By 1900, the modern acoustic upright piano as we know it had pretty much arrived. And in 1900, Yamaha introduced its first upright.
