A hybrid piano is a digital piano with a real acoustic piano action inside it. The keys, hammers, and mechanism are the same parts Yamaha puts in its acoustic instruments, and what they trigger is a digital sound source rather than strings.
That is the whole point of the AvantGrand. The touch is acoustic, so what you learn on it transfers to a grand, while the sound stays adjustable and can go to headphones at any hour.
Yamaha states a specialized grand piano action for the N1X and a specialized upright piano action for the NU1XA. The grand action needs more cabinet depth than a normal digital piano, which is the practical difference between them and the reason the NU1XA suits a room where an N1X will not fit.
