The Silent Piano is a true acoustic piano with the features musicians want from a digital instrument. Play it as a fully acoustic baby grand, switch to silent mode and hear a binaural-sampled Yamaha CFX concert grand through headphones, or blend both at once. It records your performance in WAV or MIDI, connects to a computer or tablet without an external interface, and works as a MIDI controller. On the GB1K, the silencing system engages with a dedicated lever and uses Yamaha’s Quick Escape mechanism, so the touch stays true in both modes.
The secret to a great piano is in the nuances. Every Yamaha Silent piano uses a non-contact optical sensor system that continuously measures the movement of your fingers and the detail of your pedaling. This patented in-house technology delivers exceptional accuracy without ever changing the feel of a traditional acoustic piano.
In headphones, the main piano Voice is a binaural sample of the Yamaha CFX 9-foot concert grand: a sampling technique that mimics the interaural characteristics of the human ear. The result is the natural, enveloping sound you only otherwise hear seated in front of a concert grand.
The control unit has a sophisticated design that blends unobtrusively with the piano itself, and the simple controls make the instrument easy to operate.
The SC2 records one song to internal memory, and a USB flash drive lets you save recordings and play back songs. Record in MIDI or in stereo WAV audio, up to 80 minutes per song, all as a clean digital capture with no microphone in the room.
The USB TO HOST terminal connects the piano to a computer or portable device and records high-quality audio with no additional interface. The AUX IN (3.5 mm stereo) plays sound from external devices such as sound modules, music players, and laptops, and two headphone jacks let two people listen at once.
The free Smart Pianist app lets you select Voices, control the metronome, and display scores on your smart device through a visual interface. A Yamaha USB wireless LAN adaptor (UD-WL01, sold separately) is required to use Smart Pianist over a wireless connection.
The SC2 comes with 10 preset Voices. The two piano Voices are the Yamaha CFX concert grand, with binaural sampling, and the legendary Bösendorfer Imperial. The remaining Voices cover electric pianos, harpsichord, celesta, and organs, so one instrument serves classical practice, jazz, and pop alike. Polyphony is a generous 256 notes, with Virtual Resonance Modeling and Key-Off Samples for a faithful acoustic response.
Stereophonic Optimizer reproduces natural sound distance in headphones, similar to the effect of binaural sampling. It engages automatically when any piano Voice other than CFX Grand is selected.
The moment a pianist’s fingers lift from the keys of a grand piano, subtle changes occur in the tone as the damper lowers onto the strings. Key-Off Samples are actual recordings of these changes, reproducing the most delicate details of the piano’s sound for a more realistic performance.
