The Yamaha CFX is more than a flagship nine-foot concert grand; it is the culmination of more than a decade of intense collaboration with the world’s most acclaimed pianists. Designed to translate every subtle nuance of the performer’s touch directly to the audience, the CFX eliminates the physical and acoustic barriers between what the artist intends and what the listener experiences. It is an instrument built to dominate any stage and fill any hall with breathtaking, uncompromised sound.
Introduced in the acclaimed 2022 redesign, Yamaha’s Unibody Concept marries a newly engineered rim with a refined soundboard crown to create an instrument that projects effortlessly. The back posts are treated with Yamaha’s proprietary wood-aging process (A.R.E.), which chemically matures the wood at a cellular level. The result is a piano that produces the wide, open resonance and warm, rich overtones of a meticulously seasoned instrument from the very first day it is played.
Every element of the CFX is chosen for supreme acoustic performance. The frame is individually sand-cast by master metalsmiths at the Yamaha factory in Iwata, Japan, ensuring absolute stability under immense string tension. The hammers are precision-formed from hand-selected German felt affixed to dense walnut shanks, striking bass strings that are meticulously hand-wound in pure copper.
The CFX features several innovations designed specifically to aid the performing artist. A perforated music rack—a first for any Yamaha concert grand—allows the piano’s true sound to travel naturally to the performer’s ears during rehearsal, rather than being trapped behind sheet music. Additionally, the top lid carries a unique matte finish designed specifically to eliminate distracting reflected glare from stage lighting, keeping orchestral musicians and conductors focused on the performance.
