Yamaha YUS Series

Yamaha builds the YUS Series for the experienced pianist and the professional musician. All three models share a spruce soundboard, 88 keys, and a 60-inch width, so what separates them is height, depth, and two details most buyers never think to check: the middle pedal and the key surfaces.

The YUS1 is 48 inches tall on a 24-inch cabinet. The YUS3 and YUS5 both stand 52 inches on a 26-inch cabinet, which buys longer bass strings and more soundboard area. The YUS5 is the only model in the series with a true sostenuto middle pedal rather than a mute, and the only one with Yamaha’s Ivorite key surfaces.

Every new piano includes a bench, and every acoustic piano leaves the store tuned to A-440. All three are on the floor in Freehold.

Yamaha YUS1 Upright Pianos

At 48 inches the YUS1 is full professional height on a 24-inch cabinet, weighing 502 lbs. It is the compact model in the series, and it gives up less than the four-inch height gap to the YUS3 suggests, because it is built on the same 60-inch width and the same spruce soundboard.

Yamaha’s own positioning is unambiguous: designed for the experienced pianist and the professional musician. Choose it where the room will not take a 26-inch depth. Five finishes.

Yamaha YUS3 Upright Pianos

The YUS3 steps up to 52 inches and a 26-inch cabinet at 517 lbs. Those extra inches buy longer bass strings and more soundboard area than the YUS1, which is where the difference is heard rather than in any change to the action.

Its middle pedal is a mute, as on the YUS1. Four finishes.

Yamaha YUS5 Upright Pianos

The YUS5 shares the YUS3’s 52-inch height and 26-inch depth, and at 530 lbs it is the heaviest upright in the series. Two things separate it, and neither is size.

A true sostenuto middle pedal. The YUS1 and YUS3 use a mute pedal, the standard upright arrangement for reducing volume. The YUS5 replaces it with sostenuto, which sustains only the notes held at the moment the pedal goes down and leaves everything played afterwards unaffected. That is a grand piano function, and on repertoire that specifies it a mute pedal cannot substitute.

Ivorite key surfaces. The YUS5 is the only model in the series using Yamaha’s Ivorite and WPC rather than acrylic and phenolic resin. Ivorite is Yamaha’s own material, developed to hold moisture the way ivory does, so the key surface stays grippy under a warm hand through a long session.

Three finishes.
